Orthodontics for children and adolescents

Early treatment

Orthodontic treatment may be useful from as early as the age of three. Defects which are detected early can often be treated using (myofunctional) training exercises or simple measures, such at the use of a buccal cavity plate or function regulators. Even the early loss of a deciduous tooth will frequently lead to a subsequent lack of space in the remaining dentition. By the use of a simple spacer, the gap can be held open. We can therefore undertake early and effective intervention in response to defects and, by the adjustment of developments, ensure that subsequent treatment will be superfluous or only required to a very limited extent.

Treatment during the change-over to adult dentition

During this change-over phase, treatment is generally undertaken using a "removable brace", a removable appliance of colourful plastic and special wire. Using functional orthodontics, we can harmonize the facial and soft tissue development of children and adolescents and improve the stability of dentition by the optimum adjustment of the meshing of the upper and lower teeth. The correct development of the jaw can prevent overcrowding and eliminate the associated need for extractions.

Treatment of permanent dentition

Once all the adult teeth have come through, the main growth phase of the jaw is complete. No further growth adjustments can be undertaken at this point, and the main focus is on the correction of dental defects. Treatment is undertaken using a "fixed brace" consisting of brackets which are securely fixed to the teeth and connected by a wire, in which the movement of teeth is generated by the transmission of force from the wire to the brackets.
